Burger King's Moldy Whopper

A rotting burger that made "no preservatives" unforgettable.

The hook: Every food ad makes the product look perfect. Burger King showed its burger covered in mould.

The campaign

On 19 February 2020, Burger King announced it was removing artificial preservatives from the Whopper. Instead of a polished product shot, the "Moldy Whopper" campaign showed a time-lapse of a Whopper decaying over 34 days until it was covered in green and blue mould. The line was simple: the beauty of real food is that it gets ugly.

The work was created by the agencies INGO Stockholm, David Miami and Publicis Bucharest. At launch, Burger King said the preservative-free Whopper was already in more than 400 US restaurants, with the rest to follow by the end of the year.

Why it worked

  1. It proved the claim instead of stating it. "No artificial preservatives" is easy to ignore. A burger that rots on camera is not.
  2. It broke the category's rules. Food advertising is built on styled, glossy shots. Showing decay made the work impossible to scroll past.
  3. The ugly image carried a positive message. The mould was evidence of real ingredients, so the shock worked for the brand, not against it.
  4. It took a quiet swipe at the competition. Viral photos had long claimed that some fast-food burgers barely decay. Burger King did not need to name anyone.
  5. One image did all the work. The time-lapse, the posters showing "Day 28", "Day 32" and "Day 35", and the social posts all told the same story.

The result

The campaign split opinion at launch: some marketers called it brave, others worried about showing mouldy food. It went on to win a Grand Prix in the Outdoor category at Cannes Lions 2021. The agencies' award material reports billions of impressions and a lift in sales, but those figures come from the entry itself and are not independently verified.

The lesson for your business

  • Find the proof, not the adjective. If your claim is "fresh", "fast" or "reliable", ask what you can show that makes it undeniable.
  • Be willing to break a category habit. When every competitor looks the same, the brand that does the opposite gets remembered.
  • Tie the stunt to a real change. Moldy Whopper worked because there was a genuine product decision behind it. Bold creative without substance does not last.
