The hook: Coca-Cola did not sell a drink. It sold a moment of connection between two countries that rarely see each other.
The campaign
In March 2013, Coca-Cola and the agency Leo Burnett placed a custom vending machine in a shopping centre in New Delhi and another in Lahore. Each machine had a large touch screen with a live video link to the other, so people in India and Pakistan could see each other in real time.
Strangers were invited to complete simple shared tasks together, such as tracing a peace symbol, touching hands through the screen and dancing. Trade coverage reports that finishing a task earned both sides a free Coke. The three-day event was filmed and turned into a short film that Coca-Cola distributed to its markets.
Why it worked
- It sold a feeling, not a product. The brand's idea of "happiness" became something people could do, not just read.
- Participation was simple. The tasks were gestures anyone could copy, so no explanation was needed.
- It was built to be filmed. The interactions were visual and emotional, which made them easy to turn into a film and share.
- The challenge was real. Linking two countries took serious technical work, which gave the story weight beyond an ordinary promotion.
The result
The campaign's own materials report more than 10,000 attendees, over 700 connections across the border, and that more than 55 percent of the web and social traffic that followed came from India and Pakistan. Different award entries give different participation counts, and these figures come from the agency and brand, not from independent measurement, so treat them as indicative.
How a Kerala business can use this
- Turn a free sample into a shared moment. A restaurant, salon or clinic can offer a free item when two friends or family members complete a small challenge together at the counter.
- Film the reaction, not the product. One 30-second reel of real people smiling at an offer travels further than a product shot.
- Connect two groups. A live video wall between two branches, or between your office and a partner school, can make an ordinary event memorable.
